The NOS (Dutch public broadcasting system) released a short piece on the state of awareness regarding hearing damage and protection at music events in the Netherlands.
The piece starts with: "Maximum 'safe' noise level at concerts only appears to be safe with earplugs"
Only if visitors wear earplugs is the maximum noise level of 103 decibels safe at concerts in the Netherlands. The drafting of the standard of 103 dB is based on hearing protection, the Ministry of Health and industry associations and experts in the field of hearing damage confirm to Nieuwsuur. This is not mentioned in the I love my ears information campaign about hearing protection.
Unfortunately, when reading this we come to the conclusion that there is still a lot of ground to be won to to provide the general public with awareness about hearing damage and protection. Fortunately there is a lot more media coverage to the general public and pieces like this to create a shift towards better informing the public.
